The core of our outdoor educational staff at Bryant Pond 4-H Camp is our counselors, which are integral to the success of our summer programs. Counselors lead groups of campers from 6 to 12 participant’s ages 7 to 17, for week-long programs. (Several programs are 2-weeks long) 

 

This role as a Senior Field Teacher/High Ropes Coordinator, requires a high level of enthusiasm for working with children of various ages as well as other Field Teachers, with a strong dedication to safety and fun. The right candidate for this position will be able to support all High Ropes programming as well as assist with various needs throughout camp to support our field staff. Typical weekly salary for this temporary (mid-June to mid-August) position is $450 - $550 commensurate with experience and qualifications.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain all challenge course equipment and elements
  • Supervise program staff on the challenge couse
  • Nighttime duties including- Monitoring shower house and overnight support
  • Supporting and filling in for programming
  • Occasional bunk duty, or campsite coverage
  • Attend staff meetings and debriefs as scheduled.
  • Plan lessons, lead activities, mentor staff and campers, and provide opportunities for campers and staff to learn and explore the outdoors through high-quality experiences.
  • Supervise campers and ensure safety and risk management policies are followed.
  • Perform camp chores that benefit the greater community.
  • Provide basic first aid as needed
  • Depending on training, some staff will also be lifeguards, shooting sports instructors, trip leaders, or other leadership roles as warranted and agreed upon.

 

Schedule and Compensation:

  • Typically Sunday through Friday
  • Sunday 11:00 a.m.-Friday 2 p.m. unless otherwise scheduled 
  • 1 evening, typically Tuesday or Wed. off or 4 hour mid-day off block 
  • 8 weeks of camp programs plus 1 week of staff training *LG, TLT, or WFA may be scheduled at other times.

Bryant Pond 4-H Camp and Learning Center is located in Bryant Pond, Maine is nestled on the shores of Lake Christopher with 160 acres of forest and mountain trails leading to remote campsites, streams, ponds, wetlands, and a mountain summit.  A short drive from the Campus you can be in the beautiful White Mountain National Forest or the Rangeley Lakes area. The local area provides many opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts including rock climbing, backpacking, hunting and fishing, canoeing, and a large winter ski and sport industry. Portland, Maine’s largest city is only an hour’s drive with live music, great food, and shopping.

Requried:
  • At least 2 years experience with ropes course facilitation. Management experience preferred
  • Experience with belay systems, rescue and safety systems
  • Experience with debriefing and facilitation
  • Willingness to work in the outdoors with a variety of age groups from 7-18. 
  • Must be a positive role model 
  • Good communication skills 
  • Stong understanding of risk manigemnt with the ability to make decisions in stressful situations  
  • Willing to live and work in a community setting with changing program needs and focuses. 
  • Attend a week-long staff training at Bryant Pond prior to the start of camp
  • Comfortable with hights and being in climbing gear for long periods of time 

Preferred:

  • Previous camp experience or working with youth 
  • Wilderness first aid certification 
  • ACCT Certification
