The University of Maine Facilities Management Department seeks applications for an Equipment Operator CL2. Starting pay for this position is $17.73/hr.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Transporting materials between locations.
  • Collecting materials in assigned vehicle, such as recyclables and waste.
  • Moving materials and equipment for larger projects.
  • Utilizing equipment to remove snow.
  • Performing manual labor associated with the assigned task or responsibility.
  • Mowing assigned lawns and fields.
  • Planting, watering, and clipping assigned gardens and landscaping.
  • Performing basic grounds activities, such as digging, etc.
  • Utilizing equipment to perform seasonal or regular maintenance.
  • Adhering to safety procedures, including reporting mechanical and/or safety issues.
  • Operates equipment in a safe and effective manner and in accordance with state and national motor vehicle licensing requirements.
  • Plows snow and sands; fills potholes; spreads loam or gravel to assist in maintenance, repair and construction of parking lots, sidewalks, roads and lawns.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Maine commercial driver’s license (Class A or Class B)
  • Procedures for operating, inspecting, maintaining, and storing assigned equipment;
  • Traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
  • Occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of assigned motorized equipment;
  • Use of assigned tools/equipment;
  • Procedures and techniques involved in assigned work processes.
  • Providing exemplary customer service;
  • Operating assigned tools and motorized equipment safely and effectively;
  • Performing heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable conditions.
  • Identifying equipment malfunctions;
  • At least 2 years’ experience operating heavy equipment
  • Experience reading blueprints, setting grades, and using a laser level
  • Performing cleaning and maintenance of equipment;
  • Maintaining records and reports, as required;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, students, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.
  • Positions in this class typically require: Ability to perform physical activities that require talking, hearing, seeing and considerable and repetitive use of arms and legs and moving entire body, such as reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, climbing, lifting, bending, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Heavy work: The ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Lifting and exerting forces more than 50 pounds requires assistance by other employee(s) or mechanical assistance. Individual forces must never exceed 50 pounds. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, fire, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, difficult driving conditions, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an institutional setting
    Experience working in the construction industry
